John is a leading researcher on personal insolvency law and bankruptcy history in the United Kingdom. He has published widely on personal insolvency and bankruptcy history. In 2006 he gave evidence to the Scottish Parliament on bankruptcy reform and his work has been supportively cited by a number of his senior colleagues. An experienced media commentator, he has appeared on BBC television and given a number of quotes to the national press on personal insolvency matters.

In other news John has been elected to the Executive of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS). The SLS is the learned society for those who teach law in a university or similar institution or who are otherwise engaged in legal scholarship. As of Spring 2009 the Society had over 3,100 members consisting of academic and practising lawyers in a wide variety of subject areas. The Society was founded in 1908 and has charitable status. It celebrates its centenary in 2009. The Executive Committee manages the affairs of the Society and consists of nine members. John commences his three year term in October 2009.
